Pentagon: Special Guided Tour With Cal Highlights! * FULL *

    Pentagon.jpg

    * FULL *

Brigadier General and Cal alum Susan Escallier, along with several of her JAG colleagues, will be leading a specially designed guided tour of the Pentagon on August 17th at 10 am, followed by lunch. This fascinating building is the Headquarters of the Department of Defense and is absolutely packed with historical displays and artifacts, in addition to housing one of the nation's 9/11 Memorials. During this tour you'll get to see the Pentagon in action!

The Pentagon is the world's largest low-rise office building. It has more floor space than the Empire State Building, so wear comfortable shoes! Cautionary note: All members of the group MUST be escorted at all times, therefore the group must stay together in a fairly tight formation. There will be limited spots to stop and rest during the tour, so please feel comfortable walking at least a mile/for one hour. The Pentagon has been improving wheelchair accessibility in all areas, so please let us know if you or your +1 are planning on using one for the tour.

This is a member priority event, meaning DC Cal Alumni Club members get first priority at this special event, which is limited to 20 people (plus a waitlist of 20 people) on a first come first served basis. Please RSVP below to be added to the waitlist.

To become a 2018 member, please review our membership categories and join here: Join the Club!. If you'd like to check if you're a 2018 member immediately, please contact our membership chair Rob Tobiassen at Robert.Tobiassen@gmail.com. Rob will gladly check for you and aid you in becoming a 2018 member.

All members accepted to the special guided tour are required to pre-register with the Pentagon in advance. More information on these logistics will be provided to accepted RSVPs. Questions? Please email kathy.molina.cal@gmail.com

Directions: The Pentagon is accessible by Yellow and Blue Lines (Pentagon Station) and by many MetroBus lines. There is NO visitor parking at the Pentagon. Paid public parking is available at Pentagon City Mall; you will have to walk from the Mall to the Pentagon Visitor Center (about 0.6 miles).

Cal Talk with Dr. Shanta Devarajan *FULL*

PLEASE JOIN THE CAL ALUMNI CLUB OF WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR

"Why Are There So Many Poor People in this World?
    a talk given by

    Shanta Devarajan, Ph.D. '81

Senior Director, Development Economics and Acting Chief Economist, World Bank

    Tuesday, June 26th at 6:30 p.m.

UCDC, 1608 Rhode Island Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20036

Dr. Shanta Devarajan has explored this topic for much of his career. He studied mathematics at Princeton and economics at Berkeley, has taught at Harvard's Kennedy School, and worked at the World Bank. Through this journey, he has gained insight into the question of why, despite technological advances, economic growth, and billions of dollars of aid, about 800 million people still live on less than $1.90 a day.

The reason? Well-intentioned public policies, often aimed at helping poor people, have backfired. In Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, these policies are controlled by politically powerful groups who then resist efforts at pro-poor reforms. What can be done? One solution is to inform poor people, so they can use this knowledge to hold politicians accountable and thereby escape poverty.

Dr. Devarajan is the Senior Director for Development Economics and Acting Chief Economist of the World Bank. Since joining the World Bank in 1991, he has been a Principal Economist, Research Manager, and the Chief Economist for Human Development, and of the South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East and North Africa Regions. He was the director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. Before 1991, he was on the faculty of Harvard Kennedy School. Born in Sri Lanka, Shanta received his A.B. in Mathematics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley.

We hope to see you there!
