All University of California alumni in the metro DC area, friends, and current UCDC students and their mentors are invited to participate in the second of a series of climate change panels offered by the Cal Alumni Club of Washington DC. Learn how to get involved, take action and communicate the urgency of the situation to anyone. As individual citizens, you have the power to use your unique influence to drive change and make an impact. In this discussion, you will learn how to engage others, especially climate change deniers, and learn what internship opportunities are available in this field.

Current Invited panelists are alumni of UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz & UC Berkeley.

Moderated by Jason Steinhauer, the inaugural director of the Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest at Villanova University; a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute; and the creator of the field of History Communication, modeled in part on science communication. His forthcoming book will examine how history gets communicated on the Internet. He is a graduate of New York University and The George Washington University and a proud husband of a Cal Bear alumna.

Edward Maibach, Director, GMU, Center for Climate Change Communication (Confirmed) Maibach is a Mason distinguished University Professor – a communication scientist who is an expert in the uses of strategic communication and social marketing to address climate change and related public health challenges. Maibach earned his PhD in communication science at Stanford University, his Masters in Public Health at San Diego State University, and his BA in psychology at U-C San Diego.

David Doniger, Senior Strategic Director, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Climate & Clean Energy Program, (Tentative) Doniger has been at the forefront of the battle against air pollution and global climate change since he joined NRDC in 1978 where he defends the Clean Air Act from assaults in Congress. He is based in Washington, D.C. He has his JD and Masters in Community Planning (MCP) from U-C Berkeley.

Miro Korenha, Co-Founder & Publisher, Our Daily Planet, (Confirmed) Korenha has spent the past decade working on climate change and sustainability issues for government, NGOs, and industry and has had interacted with people from every background who are fighting to protect our planet. She has a BA, Business Economics, History of Art and Architecture, U-C Santa Barbara.

Austin Downs, Global Cleanup Coordinator, Earth Day Network, (Confirmed) Downs’ areas of expertise include subnational climate diplomacy, plastic pollution, climate volunteer organizing. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in politics with a minor in education from the U-C Santa Cruz, and a Master of Science in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Julia Cohen, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Plastic Pollution Coalition. (Confirmed)Cohen is an experienced non-profit founder and director currently working with more than 1,100 organizations and businesses from 75 countries, plus 150 notable ambassadors, united towards the goal of eliminating single-use plastic and its toxic impacts worldwide. She received a BA from U C Santa Cruz and her MPH from U C Berkeley.
