The Annual Reception is the premier event of the Cal Alumni Club of Washington, DC, and contributes much-needed funds to support our expansive club operations and student scholarships at UC Berkeley. Through our previous 11 receptions, the DC Cal community has raised more than $40,000 for CAA Leadership Awards and Cal-in-the-Capital.

We look forward to gathering in person to welcome Stephanie and Ron Rivera to Washington DC and Bear Territory east! Come enjoy delicious appetizers, an open bar, and the ambiance of the historic Cosmos Club, which is centrally located in Washington, DC.

Stephanie and Ron arrived in Washington, DC in 2020, when Ron became the head coach of the Washington Football Team following a distinguished coaching career, most recently as head coach for the Carolina Panthers. After playing linebacker at Cal (1980-83), Ron spent nine years playing for the other “Bears” (Chicago), and was part of their 1985 Super Bowl championship team. A trailblazer, Ron was the first person of Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Filipino descent to play in the NFL, and when hired as coach of the Panthers in 2011, was the third Latino head coach in the NFL.

Stephanie was a Cal scholar-athlete as a member of the women’s basketball team, and has coached basketball from the community to the professional level, including for DC’s own Mystics. At Cal, she was a founding member of the Cal Filipino Alumni Chapter and recently became a member of the UC Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees. Both California natives, the couple’s relationship dates to their Berkeley days, where they met (at Yogurt Park) in 1983. Any trip to the Bay Area includes a visit to campus, and they maintain strong Cal connections. Stephanie and Ron are generous donors to the university. They established the Ron Rivera Linebacker Scholarship for the football program in 2002; continue to purchase season tickets for both football and women’s basketball; and in 2020 made a leadership gift to Cal’s softball facility, which will be named the Rivera Family Cal Softball Field.

The Riveras’ philanthropy extends far beyond Sather Gate. In North Carolina, they were deeply engaged in the community and supported organizations including the Ronald McDonald House, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the USO, and the Humane Society of Charlotte, which honored Stephanie and Ron for their fundraising efforts. As a cancer survivor, Ron, along with Stephanie, supports the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. They have two grown children, Christopher and Courtney.

Please join us in welcoming the Riveras to Washington, DC and our spirited Cal Bears community!

NOTE: COVID-19 protocols to come.
