This is a substituted event for August, the original event for August (Carnegie Science Museum) has been rescheduled for September.
Gadsby’s Tavern, built in 1785, is a historical museum operated by the City of Alexandria. George Washington was a frequent visitor. Other prominent customers of the tavern included John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette were all honored with festivities in its ballroom. The original ballroom woodwork is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but a reproduction was installed in the tavern when the building was renovated in the 1970’s.
For those interested, we will have lunch together in historic Old Town Alexandria following the tour. And for real history buffs, you may wish to visit the Stabler-Leadbetter Apothecary Museum, which has a lot of quirky stuff in it, on your own after lunch. It’s just around the block.
The cost for the tour of Gadsby's is $6.
