The William Jefferson Clinton Federal Building, originally the US Post Office Department, began construction under the Hoover Administration and was completed under the New Deal in 1934. It is currently the headquarters for what’s left of the Environmental Protection Agency. It is richly decorated with New Deal artworks. There are 25 murals and 22 sculptural elements: 12 bas-reliefs, 2 statues, and 8 carved wood medallions. Famous artists include Eugene Francis Savage, William C. Palmer, and Karl Free.

The building itself is spectacular. The tour will be led by Cal Alum and GSA Art Historian Nick Hartigan. If you enjoyed the Culture Club tour of the New Deal artwork in the Wilbur G Cohen building, you will want to see this too.

When: Wednesday, September 9, at 2 PM.
Where: 12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, adjacent to the Federal Triangle Metro Station. (More details about where to enter the building will be forthcoming.)

Fun fact about Federal Triangle: Before the Civil War, this area was known as “Murder Bay.” It was bordered by Pennsylvania Ave., 15th St., and the "open sewer" of the Washington Canal. (The canal was a fever dream of L’Enfant’s, which he intended to emulate Venice’s Grand Canal. It was filled in during the 1870s due to disuse). Murder Bay was a total slum - rife with prostitution and robberies. Its seedy reputation grew further when Civil War soldiers favored Murder Bay's cheap alcohol and many brothels. While DC outlawed prostitution in 1914, lobbying continues unabated. In 1928, the city leveled Murder Bay and began building Federal Triangle in its place.

Bears! Come for an evening to test your skills at trivia with the Washington DC Stanford Club. Bring your friends to this fun event and test your knowledge against alumni from the Farm. Kick off the new academic year and ACC football season with our rivals from the South Bay. 

Venue opens at 6:30 pm, and trivia starts at 7. 

This location is a few blocks from the Red Line Cleveland Park Metro station. We will play in the upstairs room. The entrance fee is for the event, and attendees will purchase their own food and refreshments. The restaurant is newly renovated, and the website is not yet online. 

Wear your Cal gear and may the odds be in your favor. 

Our team is limited to 20 players, so get your tickets before they sell out! 

Tudor place is a federal-style mansion that was the original home of Martha Peter – a grand daughter of Martha Washington. It was home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants from 1805 to 1983.

There is an extensive garden and a massive collection of historical artifacts that belonged to George and Martha Washington, making it the largest public collection of such items apart from Mount Vernon. The house sits on 5.5 acres of gardens and an English pond. You can visit the gardens after the tour. 

The tour will last about one hour, but as we typically have 20-30 participants at these events, groups of 15 or more will be split into two groups for the tour due to capacity restrictions within the house. The second group will begin their tour approximately 10 minutes after the first group. We should finish by 12:15PM.

There will be an optional group lunch at a nearby restaurant following the tour, for those interested. 

Accessibility: The second floor of the mansion is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users or individuals with mobility issues that are not able to go up/down large staircases, but the main floor of the historic house can be made accessible for wheelchair users by installing temporary ramps over the sets of 2-3 steps that connect the different sections of the house.

Please note that due to historic doorways, Tudor Place can only accommodate wheelchairs less than 27” in width. Please contact Shelby Stevenson, Visitor Services at 202-580-7325 at least 48 hours in advance of the tour is you will require the temporary ramps. Also, If there are group members unable to go to the second floor, they are able to leave the tour right before the groups head upstairs (they would only miss about 10 minutes at most).

While Tudor Place does not have a public parking lot, they can accommodate visitors who need accessible parking. To coordinate a spot, call the Visitor Center directly at (202) 965-0400 in advance. 
Street parking is available for everyone else. It’s not close to a Metro station, so plan to drive, carpool, or take a Metro Bus.  

 
What: Guided tour of Tudor Place mansion.

When: October 10, 2026, 11 am - 12:15 pm for the tour (optional lunch following) 

Where: 1644 31st NW, Washington, DC (in Georgetown between Q and R streets). 

Cost: Admission: $10 per person. (I need to pay for everyone, so you can either reimburse me on October 10, or use Venmo to pay in advance, using @Mark-Coles-4 ).
