The 1812 Museum (operated by the National Society United States Daughters of 1812) is a little-known gem located in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It is dedicated entirely to the history, artifacts, and military records of the pivotal 1784–1815 era.
The downstairs library houses extensive archives and texts dedicated to the War of 1812 and early American genealogy. Upstairs, there is a small but exceptional collection of period artifacts.
Highlights include authentic 19th-century military uniforms, textiles, glassware, and documents dating from the American Revolution through the Treaty of Ghent.
The museum is in the Admiral John Henry Upshur House—a stunning Queen Anne-style brick row house built in 1884 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1812 Museum is open infrequently, but fortunately the Daughters of 1812 have created a special slot just for our group.
