The Islamic Center of Washington is a mosque and Islamic cultural center, located on DC’s Embassy Row. When it opened in 1957, it was the largest mosque in the western hemisphere. The Washington diplomatic community played a leading role in assisting with its construction. Egypt donated a bronze chandelier and sent specialists who wrote Qur'anic verses to adorn the mosque’s walls and ceiling. Tiles came from Turkey along with the experts to install them. Persian rugs came from Iran. Support for the project also came from the American Muslim community.  The center was dedicated by President Eisenhower in 1957.

From its inception, its goals have been to promote of a better understanding of Islam in the United States. It is an institution that stands ready to help anyone who may reveal a desire to embrace Islam and it serves as a source of guidance for Muslims. It provides Qur’an and Islamic literature and distributes publications that create awareness and knowledge of Islamic Truth.

The Islamic Center provides help to the needy by extending assistance (zakat), especially to families in distress. Other activities of the Islamic Center include:

• Officiating at marriage ceremonies to wedding couples.
• Organizing language and religious classes both for adults and children.
• Offering counsel whenever needed.
• Welcoming visitors and meeting their anticipation of gaining knowledge about Islam.
• Providing a research center equipped with an adequate library.

The Islamic Center cooperates with the U.S. Administration, Muslim, and non-Muslim Organizations to promote a better understanding of Islam and the Islamic Center’s ideals.
