Tudor place is a federal-style mansion that was the original home of Martha Peter – a grand daughter of Martha Washington. It was home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants from 1805 to 1983.
There is an extensive garden and a massive collection of historical artifacts that belonged to George and Martha Washington, making it the largest public collection of such items apart from Mount Vernon. The house sits on 5.5 acres of gardens and an English pond. You can visit the gardens after the tour.
The tour will last about one hour, but as we typically have 20-30 participants at these events, groups of 15 or more will be split into two groups for the tour due to capacity restrictions within the house. The second group will begin their tour approximately 10 minutes after the first group. We should finish by 12:15PM.
There will be an optional group lunch at a nearby restaurant following the tour, for those interested.
Accessibility: The second floor of the mansion is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users or individuals with mobility issues that are not able to go up/down large staircases, but the main floor of the historic house can be made accessible for wheelchair users by installing temporary ramps over the sets of 2-3 steps that connect the different sections of the house.
Please note that due to historic doorways, Tudor Place can only accommodate wheelchairs less than 27” in width. Please contact Shelby Stevenson, Visitor Services at 202-580-7325 at least 48 hours in advance of the tour is you will require the temporary ramps. Also, If there are group members unable to go to the second floor, they are able to leave the tour right before the groups head upstairs (they would only miss about 10 minutes at most).
While Tudor Place does not have a public parking lot, they can accommodate visitors who need accessible parking. To coordinate a spot, call the Visitor Center directly at (202) 965-0400 in advance.
Street parking is available for everyone else. It’s not close to a Metro station, so plan to drive, carpool, or take a Metro Bus.
